THE FIELD GUIDES

Calories, portions & food records

Understand what an energy estimate includes and how raw, cooked and packaged food entries differ.

An equation is a starting estimate

The maintenance calculator combines an equation for resting expenditure with an activity assumption. Neither is a direct measurement of your energy use. It does not set an automatic weight-loss target.

Match the record to the food

Dry rice and cooked rice describe different water contents. The food calculator identifies preparation states and lets you enter a package label. Do not substitute one state for another simply because the food name matches.

Use a batch total when cooking changes weight

For a mixed dish, add the relevant ingredients and divide by the measured finished batch or number of portions. Water loss changes final weight; it does not turn one hundred grams of a cooked dish into the same amount of every raw ingredient.
